Skin Barrier Calming Lotion

A fragrance-free barrier lotion with ceramide NP, several forms of hyaluronic acid, panthenol, centella compounds and a long list of peptides, in a light, fast-sinking texture.

Buyer verdictA comfortable daily lotion for sensitive, dry-patchy or combination skin that finds creams too heavy. The price box shows Amazon US as cheaper per ml, but Olive Young's set adds an 80ml bottle, and with that counted the two are roughly level.

From the US, buy it at home: Amazon US is cheaper than Seoul right now.

Seoul packs often add a bonus (+80ml); we don't count it in the saving.

What it is

Ongredients is a smaller Korean brand that became known on Olive Young for this one product, a barrier lotion that’s often in the store’s moisturiser rankings. It’s a milky, white lotion that spreads thin and sinks in fast. Olive Young currently sells the updated EX version as a 220ml bottle with an 80ml bottle added.

The Korean ingredient list reads like a lighter barrier cream. The base is water, humectants and light emollients such as caprylic/capric triglyceride and cetyl ethylhexanoate, with a little phenyl trimethicone for slip. Then come arginine, hydroxyethyl urea, panthenol and plant oils (jojoba and sunflower). Further down there’s ceramide NP, several forms of hyaluronic acid, madecassoside and other centella compounds, plus about a dozen peptides in small amounts.

There’s no fragrance and no essential oil.

Who it suits (and who should skip it)

Good pick if

  • Your skin is sensitive or easily red, and creams feel too heavy
  • You have combination skin that’s dry in some places and oily in others
  • You want a moisturiser that sits well under sunscreen and makeup

Skip it if

  • Your skin is very dry and needs a rich cream or balm
  • You want visible results on wrinkles or dark spots from your moisturiser
  • You prefer a gel moisturiser with a cooling, watery feel

What the ingredients do

Ceramide NP is one of the lipids skin uses to hold its barrier together. A lotion can’t rebuild a damaged barrier by itself, but ceramides help it stay comfortable while it recovers. The hyaluronic acid forms and glycerin draw water into the surface, and hydroxyethyl urea adds a soft, non-sticky hydration.

Panthenol (provitamin B5), madecassoside and the other centella compounds are well-known calming ingredients. They’re one reason this lotion is popular with people whose skin reacts to almost everything.

The peptides and plant extracts (coptis, borage, molokhia, carrot, mate) are present in small amounts. They add to the story, but the basic hydrating and barrier ingredients are what you’ll notice.

How to use it

Ongredients says to use it at the lotion step: take a small amount and pat it into skin until absorbed. In practice that means after toner and serum, as your moisturiser. Two pumps are usually enough for the face.

Oily skin can use it alone, morning and night. Dry skin can use it in the morning and layer a richer cream on top at night. It’s gentle enough to use with retinoids or exfoliating acids.

How it compares

Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion is the cheaper drugstore option. It’s similarly simple, but it’s a body-and-face lotion with less going on. Anua Heartleaf 70 Daily Lotion is lighter, with a heartleaf focus for oily, irritated skin. Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream is the step up for very dry or damaged skin.

Is it worth buying in Seoul?

It’s close. Amazon US sells a 220ml bottle for less than Olive Young’s regular price, so our price box, which only counts the main bottle, shows Seoul as more expensive. The Olive Young set adds an 80ml bottle, though. Counted per ml with that included, the Seoul set comes out about the same as Amazon US, or slightly cheaper.

So buy it in Seoul if you want the bonus bottle or the current EX formula, or if you need it for the trip itself. Don’t go out of your way for the saving. A 300ml set is also heavy, so pack it in your checked bag.

FAQ

Does it contain fragrance?

No. The Korean ingredient list has no fragrance or essential oils.

Is it heavy enough on its own?

For oily, combination and normal skin, usually yes. Dry skin may want a cream on top at night, or in winter.

What does 'EX' mean?

It's the updated version of the original Skin Barrier Calming Lotion. Some sellers abroad still list the older bottle, so check for EX on the label if you want the current formula.

Is it a functional cosmetic?

No. It isn't registered for brightening or wrinkle claims in Korea. It's a plain moisturiser, which is all it's meant to be.
